If you’ve already had braces as a teenager, you may not think you’ll need them again as an adult. If you wore your retainer religiously, or you were given the option of a permanent retainer on the back of your teeth, you may be right. On the other hand, if you’re like most of us, and you were perhaps not as faithful in wearing your retainer as you could have been, you may face problems with your teeth in adulthood.
Sometimes, even someone who did wear a retainer faithfully may need braces. People’s mouths can change over time, and teeth can shift naturally. When misalignment occurs, it can increase the buildup of plaque and bacteria in the mouth, and this can cause periodontal disease or gum diseases. When teeth shift, they can pull away from the gums, and often this can only be fixed with painful gum surgery. What’s more, misaligned teeth can cause headaches and earaches, or even gastrointestinal problems that result from an inability to chew properly.
Fortunately, if you need braces as an adult, there are many options available to you.
- Traditional braces: Made of metal, these are familiar to anyone who visited an orthodontist in middle or high school. They can’t be removed, they’re uncomfortable and unattractive, they often require repair, and they require certain dietary shifts.
- Incognito lingual braces: These are very much like traditional braces, but they’re on the back of the teeth instead of the front, so they’re not visible.
- Invisalign: Arguably the best option, Invisalign uses comfortable, custom-fit aligners to straighten teeth. These aligners are trays that slip over your teeth, made of a proprietary type of plastic that is virtually invisible. Because they’re custom fit to each user’s gum line, they’re more comfortable than traditional braces. Even though there are other aligners on the market, they don’t have the custom fit of Invisalign, so they’re not as comfortable or attractive.
