Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are tiny, metal screws that are surgically implanted into your jawbone and act as a prosthetic tooth root on top of which a crown or bridge is placed. Implants actually fuse to your gums and the bone in your jaw, making them function much like your natural tooth root by providing a sturdy and stable foundation for a tooth’s crown.

By mimicking your natural roots, dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth that allow you to chew, speak, and smile with confidence, in addition to providing you with a wealth of oral health benefits.

Why should I get dental implants?

Your mouth was designed to have teeth in it, and for all of those teeth to work together in a particular harmony. By permanently replacing your missing teeth with something very similar to your natural structures, dental implants provide a number of benefits to your oral and overall health, such as:

Bone retention

Because dental implants fuse with your bone, they promote bone stimulation and prevent the bone loss in your jaw that typically happens when you’re missing teeth

Bite alignment

Dental implants fill in the gap in your smile, preventing your other teeth from shifting out of place and throwing off the natural alignment of your bite.

Improved speech and chewing

By mimicking your tooth root structures, dental implants make it much easier to chew and speak naturally than you would with missing teeth, and don’t require the extra acclimation and jaw work that dentures entail.

Improved appearance

Over time, the facial muscles around missing teeth begin to droop and sag. By stimulating your jawbone and filling in the gaps in your smile, dental implants prevent this from happening and keep your face and mouth in its natural shape.

And because dental implants are just like your natural teeth, they’re also incredibly easy to care for. You just brush and floss them as you do all the other teeth in your mouth!

How do I get dental implants?

Getting dental implants at Smiles Family Dental usually involves two or more office visits. During your first visit, the team of dentists anesthetize the gums and tissue around the area of your missing tooth, make a surgical incision in your gum and jawbone, and insert the implant into your bone socket.

After 3-9 months, your jaw will have healed and the implant will have fused with your bone, a process called osseointegration. When you come back in for your second visit, the team examines you to assess the success of the implant, and if everything looks good, they install a custom-designed crown or bridge on top of the implant that looks like your natural tooth and makes your smile even fuller.

As soon as you leave the office, you’ll be able to eat, speak, and chew as if the implant were your natural tooth!
